Why is self-awareness so difficult?
Why do we struggle with self-awareness? Despite the plethora of books, videos, and podcasts available, achieving true self-awareness remains a significant challenge. It’s essential to personal growth, but why is it so hard to attain?
In this newsletter and the accompanying podcast episode, we delve into this topic and provide insights into the barriers that prevent us from becoming truly self-aware.
Thoughts and experiences
Let’s consider self-awareness. Many of us think we know ourselves, but do we really? Self-awareness isn't just about recognising our strengths but also acknowledging our flaws and blind spots. This journey can be daunting and filled with obstacles.
Here are some key challenges we identified:
First, fear of uncomfortable truths. We often avoid self-reflection because we fear what we might discover about ourselves. This defence mechanism prevents us from seeing our true selves. I didn’t even know that my past might hide some uncomfortable truths until I explored the subject with a friend through a series of meaningful conversations.
Next, lack of motivation. Did you know the feel-good hormone dopamine is responsible for motivation? We start with a full tank in the morning, but if we are not careful, distractions, like social media quickly drain our reserves. So be careful what you start your day with to keep your dopamine levels high for the highest-value tasks in the morning.
Difficulty with change is another barrier. Recognising the need for change is one thing; implementing it is another. Our brains are wired to prefer routine and comfort, making personal transformation challenging and requiring real effort. You know when you feel like your brain is hurting from an intense task? That’s the uncomfortable effort of actively thinking.
Then there’s arrogance and overconfidence. Many people overestimate their level of self-awareness. Studies show that while 95% of people think they are self-aware, only 10-15% truly are. Why would you seek deeper understanding if you are overconfident in thinking there is no room for improvement?
Finally, there is the issue of the quality or lack of guidance. The journey to self-awareness can be overwhelming without proper guidance. The world is full of advice. You probably have a few books on self-improvement yourself. Everyone is an expert in one or another area on how to improve. The problem is that this is either unproven claims (noise) or widely generic advice that requires considerable effort to be tailored to your unique circumstances.
Quote of the week
"Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life, and you will call it fate."
What does the research say?
Research supports the idea that many of us have cognitive biases that distort our self-perception. A staggering 95% of people think they're self-aware, while only 10-15% are truly self-aware. This discrepancy highlights the prevalence of defence mechanisms and avoidance of uncomfortable truths [1].
Moreover, our highly narcissistic and comparative culture can contribute to a lack of motivation to pursue genuine self-awareness. Admitting mistakes or asking for help can be uncomfortable in such an environment [1].
Another significant barrier is the discomfort associated with change. Self-awareness often requires personal growth, which can be uncomfortable [1].
Arrogance and overconfidence are also common. Overestimating one's self-awareness can hinder personal growth. Many believe they understand themselves fully, but the reality is often different [1].
While these barriers are widely discussed, robust scientific studies specifically addressing these as the primary barriers to self-awareness are limited. Further research is needed to conclusively support these findings from a scientific standpoint [1;3].
The personal barriers to success:
Beyond the materials and their effectiveness, personal barriers play a crucial role in hindering self-awareness and growth:
Consistency: Maintaining momentum over time is tough. Procrastination often sets in after the initial enthusiasm fades.
Fear of Failure: The fear of not succeeding or facing discomfort prevents many from even starting.
Unrealistic Goals: Setting unrealistic goals can lead to frustration and disappointment.
Isolation: Going it alone can be isolating. Sharing progress and having accountability can improve motivation.
Resistance to Change: Habits and comfort zones are powerful forces. Breaking free requires effort and determination.
Information Overload: The vast and overwhelming self-improvement landscape leads to analysis paralysis.
Self-Criticism: Being too hard on oneself can demoralise. Self-compassion is crucial for sustained growth.
Surface-Level Changes: True self-improvement involves understanding underlying beliefs, emotions, and patterns.
Life's Demands: Balancing personal growth with life’s demands is challenging. Unexpected events can disrupt efforts.

The takeaway message
Our exploration into the complexities of self-awareness has revealed numerous barriers, from cognitive biases to cultural pressures.
Understanding these obstacles and overcoming them involves a multifaceted approach.
Firstly, embracing uncomfortable truths and being willing to confront them head-on is crucial. This requires cultivating a mindset of curiosity and openness to personal flaws.
Secondly, finding motivation through setting realistic and achievable goals can help maintain momentum in the self-awareness journey. Engaging in regular self-reflection and seeking feedback from others can provide valuable insights. Additionally, gradually implementing new habits and routines can make the process more manageable by breaking down the resistance to change.
Lastly, leveraging personalised tools and guidance, such as mentors or supportive communities, can offer tailored advice and accountability, making self-awareness more navigable and effective. We can foster deeper self-awareness and continuous personal growth by strategically addressing these barriers.
